March 28, 2022: Product tagging feature

Instagram is expanding its product tagging feature to all users in the United States, allowing them to tag products and sell items directly from a post. Business owners will receive a notification when their products are tagged by other users, and brands will be able to control who tags their products in the setting menu. The feature, which was previously only available to creators and businesses, will roll out to all American users in the coming months.

March 24, 2022: Chronological feed

Five years after Instagram first switched to an algorithmically-ranked feed, the company is bringing back its chronological layout, a feature that allows users to view their Instagram feed in the order that photos were actually posted. Instagram will leave its algorithm ranking method on by default, but users can choose between the two modes by tapping on the Instagram logo on the top left of the app.

March 17, 2022: Parental control tools

Instagram is launching a new set of parental control tools that help parents keep a watchful eye on their children. With these parental-supervision tools, parents can set time limits and access information about their children’s activity on the app, including which accounts their children are following as well as who is following them. Parents will also receive notifications when their kids report other users. The tools will first roll out to Instagram in the U.S, with more features coming in the future.

March 15, 2022: Live Moderator On Instagram Live

To provide a more pleasant streaming experience for creators, Instagram started supporting Live moderator service for its streams, where live creators can appoint a moderator by tapping the three dots in the comment bar and choosing from suggested accounts or searching results. Once chosen, the Live moderator has the right to remove viewers, report comments and turn off comments for specific viewers.

March 7, 2022: Auto-generated captions

Instagram is adding auto-generated captions to IG Feed videos, with the aim of making Instagram more accessible for hard-of-hearing and deaf users or users who prefer to watch videos without sound. Users will have the ability to turn the feature on or off. The auto-generated captions will work for 17 languages at launch, with more languages coming in the future.

March 1, 2022: Instagram shuts down IGTV app

Instagram has announced that it is ending support for the separate IGTV app, allowing users to have all of the video features and abilities in the Instagram main app. The IGTV app, a standalone video application that allows for longer videos compared to Instagram feeds, will be removed from app stores in mid-March. The company will focus on simplifying and improving video in the main Instagram app over the coming months.

February 22, 2022: Minimum daily time limit increased to 30 minutes

Instagram is increasing the minimum daily time limit setting from 5 minutes to 30 minutes. Users are now able to set a reminder for 30 minutes, 45 minutes, one hour, two hours, and three hours, while previously users could set a reminder for as low as 10 minutes a day.

February 10, 2022: ‘Your activity’ & ‘Security checkup’ features launched worldwide

Instagram is introducing a “Your activity” tab, located in the upper right corner of your profile menu. It allows users to delete their content and interactions including posts, stories, reels, comments, likes and more. Users will also be able to sort and filter their content and interactions by date and search for past activities from specific date ranges.

Another new feature “Security checkup” guides users through the steps needed to secure their accounts. Users can check login activity, review profile information and update their account recovery information. You can complete your security checkup by going into your settings.

February 7, 2022: 3D avatars

Meta is bringing its 3D avatars to Instagram Stories and direct messages, allowing Instagram users to create a digital depiction of themselves and show up as their virtual selves in stickers and feed posts. The new 3D avatars feature gives users more customization options to create a more realistic digital depiction of themselves, including new facial shapes, skin tones and some inclusive customization features like cochlear implants, over-the-air hearing aids and wheelchairs.

January 27, 2022: Instagram’s New Live Feature

Instagram rolls out a new profile banner that will display a user’s upcoming livestream. Users can create as many scheduled Lives as they’d like. If there’s more than one upcoming Live, they’ll be displayed as a side-scrolling list. The badge on the profile is a dedicated way for users to notify others about scheduled Lives, which is visible to everyone who comes across your profile. Once the banner is up, viewers can subscribe to get reminded about the livestream.

Although it’s a small change, Instagram’s new profile banners for scheduled Lives could help creators get additional exposure and reach more users on the app.

January 24, 2022: Meta plans to integrate NFTs on Instagram profiles

Instagram is now testing a new feature called "Story Likes", which allows users to react to stories in a way that only the author can see. December 9, 2021: Take a break

Instagram is rolling out a new Take a Break tool, encouraging teenagers to take breaks from the app after they have been scrolling for a certain period of time. Users will get an alert after using the app for 10 minutes, 20 minutes or 30 minutes, and will be suggested to stop scrolling and take a deep breath or listen to a song. The new feature is currently available to users in the U.S, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, and will roll out to the rest of the world early next year.

November 18, 2021: Shake to Report

Instagram is adding a new feature that allows users to rage shake their phone to report a problem. When users come across an issue with the app, they can simply shake their phone, and a pop-up screen will ask, “Did something go wrong?” with space for them to report the issue. The new feature is currently available for all users living in the US, regardless of platform.

November 12, 2021: Text-to-speech and voice effects

Instagram is rolling out two new features: TikTok-like text-to-speech and voice effects. The text-to-speech tool is listed within the text tool in the Reels camera. Once you add texts to your newly uploaded videos, you can tap a three-dot icon to open a menu for each text bubble. You will then be given options to add texts to speech voiceover.

Voice effects allow you to modify the audio or the voiceover in your post. To see these effects, simply tap the music note to open the audio mixer.

November 8, 2021: Debut of “Holiday Picks”

Instagram is rolling out a new feature called “Holiday Picks”, which allows users to enjoy live shopping events.
